“The People's Choice”

What does it take for God to truly get our attention? That is the penetrating question at the heart of this message drawn from Exodus 20:18-21, where the people of Israel stand trembling at the foot of Mount Sinai as thunder rolls, lightning flashes, and the mountain itself smokes and shakes. God has gone to extraordinary lengths to speak directly to his people, yet their response is telling: rather than draw near, they pull back and ask Moses to be their go-between. We see in this moment a pattern that is painfully familiar. We cry out to God when we need deliverance, but once the crisis passes, we drift back into distraction. We shout our agreement in moments of spiritual high emotion, only to forget our promises before Monday morning arrives. The Israelites at Sinai are not so different from us. They had witnessed miracle after miracle, yet the voice of God himself sent them retreating to a safe, comfortable distance. This message challenges us to examine whether we are doing the same thing, settling for a secondhand faith, choosing what is comfortable over what is convicting, and surrounding ourselves with voices that affirm our preferences rather than call us to transformation. The invitation is clear: stop standing afar off and draw near to the God who has already drawn near to us.
